Clare Novices Regatta results

5 Dec 2010

Great Success! For the first time in the history of Hughes Hall Boat Club, we have a trophy to display; none other than the massive Men’s Clare Novice Regatta Cup. Our first boat beat the competition to place themselves above all other crews at this early stage of the season. Having disposed of a crab-hungry First and Third crew, we took on Queens’ and terrified them so comprehensively with our powerful start that they rowed straight off the Cam and onto the bank. Clare fell victim to our ferocious push at the end of the course, before we lined up next to Caius for the heavyweight event of the afternoon; the Men’s Cup Final. All Cambridge rowers know that there’s nothing quite like beating Caius, and we can now confirm that the old adage is true. A close battle the length of the reach climaxed beneath the railway bridge, as the Hughes crew kept about quarter of a length ahead and pushed for the line. With the end in sight, a panicked crab in the Caius boat gave us the edge of certainty, and we strode confidently home to take the trophy. This really is an astounding achievement for a boat club of as humble a status as our own. Everyone at College is very proud of such an important victory, and we look to build upon such efforts in the drive towards Lents and Mays. In further ground-breaking fashion, Hughes Hall entered an unprecedented three full men’s boats, with both others being frustratingly knocked out in their first races, mostly due to the state of the novice boat. Competing in a boat worthy only of the scrap-heap deserves merit alone, but both crews applied a great deal of power and composure to some difficult races. Congratulations to all involved.

But wait, there is more! The women also performed admirably, with both boats progressing further than ever before. W1 calmly destroyed Churchill and Fitzwilliam before falling to the jewel-encrusted boat of LMBC in the quarter-finals, while W2 marched onwards to the Women’s Plate final through Christ’s and two Selwyn boats. Sadly, the girls were narrowly beaten by a strong Emmanuel crew despite unwavering support from the banks and some excellent coxing. So close to more silverware! The women’s squad in general rowed beautifully throughout Clare Novice Regatta, and have certainly given other colleges something to dwell upon over the Christmas break.
