Lent Bumps Day 1
And so the logistical nightmare that is four crews racing at bumps with three boats and two cox boxes began. First up was the W2 crew, who managed to put in a quick start and capitalize on some questionable tactics from Murray Edwards with an early bump. Next up came the M4 Division with both the Men’s 1st and Men’s 2nd eights racing. The men’s 1st eight had a rapid start and bumped FAT IV in 47 seconds. Unfortunately due to some dubious marshaling and a classic case of bumping in the wrong place at the wrong time this bump led to a pretty comprehensive pile up, leading to a re-row for the majority of the division behind. This re-row did not apply to any crews that had already bumped, which included M2 who had already sent Magdalene III to the bottom of the division. Finally came the W1 crew racing in the women’s second division (our highest placed crew). Off behind an unknown Anglia Ruskin crew (rumored to have been training on a long stretch off cam) we were relying on our fast start and solid pace to eat down their lead. With super sub, CUBC cox Courtney Wilkinson, in the three seat the W1’s managed to bump Anglia Ruskin in 27 seconds. This gave Lucy/Hughes the enviable position of finishing day one with four boats and four bumps.
