Lent Bumps Day 2

2 Mar 2011

With W1 having a rest day it was down to three boats on Wednesday. W2, rowing in division 3, feeling confident after a strong Getting on Race and first day were sadly denied the opportunity of a further bump after some pretty heroically bad coxing from a certain club gave Peterhouse II in front of them an overbump . W2 were left to row over a very empty course. Then came the M4 Division. M1 were off behind Addenbrooke’s who it would appear (and fair enough) had been spending more time saving lives than they had on the water. That said a scrappy start meant M1 had to hang on until grassy corner before they bumped up to sandwich boat. M2 were forced to row over after the crews in front each bumped out. M1, being the sandwich boat, now took the place at the back of division 3. Off behind a fast Caius III boat who were chasing Girton II it looked like a big challenge. Caius went off hard and bumped Girton under the motorway bridge and all credit to them for clearing very quickly allowing the M1 to row through unimpeded. Unfortunately Cat’s II had also bumped LMBC III early on, leaving M1 to row over…..or did they?

After discussion between the bank party and the marshal’s it was decided that the boat 300m down the river (later identified as Fitz II) was in fact still racing. And so, with this information given to the crew by cox Kate Stevens, a long chase followed from the motorway bridge to half way down the long reach where Fitz were finally DOUBLE OVERBUMPED. This historic result meant that in two days M1 had gone from 3rd in M4 to 13th in M3 in a little over 24 hours.
