Lent Bumps Day 5

5 Mar 2011

Sadly missing the presence of coach Matt Tovey, an essential part of the bumping success over the week, Saturdays racing started with a hard fought row over for M2 and unfortunately the bumping of W2 by Fitz. Then came the final two races of the week. M1 & W1. W1 were guaranteed blades if they bumped the Robinson 1st VIII and M1 certainly deserved blades if they bumped the Robinson 2nd VIII (although the captain would have the final decision on that one). M1 rowed first and after a strong start bumped the Robinson boat early on. This left them a total of eight places up, having bumped four out of their five rows. Word from Captain Alex Randall is that this performance, combined with the facts they bumped up a whole division and were the crew who moved up the most over the whole of Lent Bumps, has led the crew to be awarded blades (which they very much deserved). Finally then, to our top placed crew, W1. Previous experience indicated that they should bump Robinson early on and so the focus here clealy had to be on rowing a clean, controlled race. With three novices and six of the crew having never rowed bumps before the pressure was on. After a nervy row to the start the quality of the W1 crew came through in during the race and led them to their quickest bump of the week- 27seconds. Thus leaving Lucy/Hughes with two blades from four boats.
